Of course we offer PPTP and L2TP / IPSEC for our StaticIP VPN in addition to OpenVPN and for our freely configurable VPN servers besides OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP / IPSEC also SSTP, IKEV1 and IKEV2.
OpenVPN is a great choice for desktop users. The protocol supports AES-256 for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android and works reliably with very different Internet connections. OpenVPN authenticates data on both sides using digital certificates based on a username and password. Vulnerabilities are currently unknown to this protocol.
You should use PPTP only if you only want to bypass some country restrictions - for example, because you want to bypass country locks. PPTP is available for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, DD-WRT and some other systems and is very easy to set up. However, it does not offer AES encryption, but relies on point-to-point encryption from Microsoft, which in turn brings with it some major security flaws. Although the protocol provides a faster connection, it causes problems if your router or ISP does not support Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) technology.
L2TP / IPsec is available for Mac, Windows, Linux, and iOS, and supports AES-128 combined with Microsoft point-to-point encryption. Because of this combination, it is considered very secure and also works reliably if your devices support NAT. L2TP / IPsec is more secure than PPTP, but not quite as fast compared to PPTP. L2TP / IPsec is a good alternative to OpenVPN and IKEv1 / IKEv2, but its a bit slower compared to PPTP.
SoftEther VPN is a mature and open source VPN solution for Windows, Mac, Linux, Free BSD and Solaris. The SSL VPN technology used by SoftEther transmits VPN traffic over HTTPS (similar to SSTP) or with increased speed over UDP (similar to IPsec). The security of the VPN tunnel is guaranteed by the use of state-of-the-art cryptographic algorithms. Automatic connection setup, multiple concurrent VPN connections, and a variety of options combine the strengths of the IPsec and OpenVPN protocols, making the SoftEther protocol one of the most flexible and powerful VPN protocols.
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) is a Microsoft VPN protocol based on a combination of two technologies, SSL and TCP. It allows the establishment of a VPN tunnel over HTTPS on port 443. Thus, it can not be blocked by any firewall, nor be throttled. However, the protocol uses TCP, and in some cases, is less efficient than protocols based on UDP (e.g., IKEv2).
To use IKEv1, we recommend the Shrew Soft VPN client, a very sophisticated software that is available free of charge for Windows or Linux. Thanks to its encryption of up to 256-bit, the protocol offers almost the same level of security as IKEv2, but the standard specification lacks some features, such as NAT traversal, remote access or IP mobility. IKEv1 also works very reliably and even short breaks can not affect the connection.
The IKEv2 protocol currently provides the best technology for VPN tunnels .IKEv2 works on both Windows and Linux and works with either AES-128 or AES-256 .IKEv2 uses UDP, bypassing firewalls and has higher speeds transfer rate. It is very easy to set up, is currently the best available protocol and can be wonderfully combined with NAT devices. Another plus: IKEv2 is particularly insensitive to short breaks.
